The Spooky-Cute Puzzler Serves as the Perfect Substitute to Spooky Scares

Not every spooky season adventure needs to terrify players. Including iconic favorites such as Scooby-Doo to endearing shows like Over the Garden Wall, plenty of Halloween-themed titles are enjoyable without requiring causing fear. Additionally, a expanding collection of eerie-charming releases including spooky themes, though lacking the sleep-with-the-lights-on intensity of terror. Gloomy Eyes arrived in September, and acts as an outstanding cozy option to the truly terrifying games of this year.

An Original Single-Player Cooperative Quest

Described as a single-player cooperative puzzle game, Gloomy Eyes teams up a undead youth known as Gloomy and a human girl known as Nena as they embark on an adventure to restore sunlight to their shadowy world. They look resembles Funko Pops mixed with the characters from a stop-motion animation. The pale-skinned and tired-looking style borrows heavily from the look of Tim Burton’s films, and the plot is a classic all-ages tale. These two forms an enduring bond over the course of the game’s 14 chapters as Nena attempts to demonstrate to her clerical relative that, look, perhaps the undead can be friendly.

Creative Puzzle Mechanics

This unique term stems from the game’s interactive problem-solving. After Gloomy and Nena cross paths, gamers switch between the recent allies to solve puzzles and move forward through the stages. As an undead, Gloomy is unable to traverse through the light of a streetlight, while Nena can be captured by loitering creatures except if a light is focused on them.

They have to collaborate effectively — well, gamers operate them together — to advance through areas. Nena might relocate or temporarily shut off lights to open routes for Gloomy, while the intellectually curious character will use his zombie strength to rearrange items in the environment, opening up ways for Nena.

Captivating Environment Creation

These challenges evoke memories a touch of The Gardens Between, in the fashion the stages are suspended, diorama-like constructions that the view rotates in sync with your heroes. Gloomy Eyes’ settings are highly entertaining, leading the companions around a fair and through a ghostly building, amid other places. The game includes a “diorama view” button that permits you to view from afar and spin the areas, simultaneously to enjoy the designs and search for ways that may not have been clear.

Minor Issues and Overall Experience

And that’s one of the few difficulties with Gloomy Eyes. Similar to other games with a fixed perspective, it’s not always clear where the heroes are able to move. You may need to just bump into a multiple different items to discover which ones are interactive, as the game doesn't always indicate.

Nevertheless, those minor challenges don't obstruct of a spooky-cute good time. Gloomy Eyes is relatively brief, with approximately three to five hours worth of puzzles. Advanced areas combine subtle hidden movement and action elements with the problem-solving, as Gloomy Eyes progresses to a fulfilling — and moderately unforeseen — ending.

Release and Summary

Players avoiding the frights of fear-inducing titles won’t want to miss Gloomy Eyes. It’s available on Switch console, PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X, and is available at a reduced price for 25% off on online stores.

The spooky-cute adventure is out now on multiple platforms and provides a pleasurable alternative for fans looking for spooky entertainment minus the intense scares.
